Come join me to paint the beautiful gardens and wild flower areas indigenous to Cape Cod. Our work will focus on the ideas of simplifying patterns in vegetation, looking for focal points and bits of light to direct the viewer’s eye. Including just enough information to describe the flower species without taking away from the overall impact of the painting will also be addressed. A discussion of other artists’ approaches to the topic, with emphasis on the gardens of Joaquin Sorolla, will set the stage for our work.

This workshop will begin each day with group discussion and studio work using reference photos from nearby gardens. Demonstrations of painting the garden landscape and “at the easel” critiques of participant work, including plans for “next steps,” round out the workshop.

Supply List:
  • Uart 320 or 400 sanded paper (I will bring extra) with a backing board
  • A combination of hard and soft pastels in warm and cool color ranges (Terry Ludwig, Nupastel, Girault)
  • Rubbing alcohol, soft disposable brush, cup
  • A range of small brushes, such as a kit for beginning watercolor, is recommended.
